Like anyone else, I enjoy a variety of music-especially nice relaxing slow music when I’m in the mood. Valentine’s Day, is such an occasion for that type of music. While I was searching for music to add to my play list, I came across a mixtape set for release on the Love day by Day 26 member Willie. To my dismay, it was called The Sextape. Now again, just like anyone else I enjoy a variety of music-especially music to get me in the mood.

But then something hit me.

How old is he? Isn’t he married? Doesn’t he have a child? A family? You would think those things would prompt him to make music about love. As a full grown man with responsibilities why is sex still so relevant? Where’s the love?

Not to dismiss any of his talent or his music, because I have yet to listen to it. And don’t get me wrong, I probably will listen to it. But why is a majority of our popular music about sex? Here is a man that has a variety of inspirations to choose from and yet it all comes down to lust, not love. If we are a reflection of our music, then that must mean we value sex over love, prefer temporary satisfaction over long lasting happiness, and would rather look out for self, rather than us. And the term “us” ultimately leads to our relationships and our families which affects our communities, our society and our culture.

We are about more than just one topic-love, marriage, relationships, family, sex etc and our music should be more diverse in reflecting that. There is nothing wrong with sex. (Now promiscuous, unprotected sex is another topic, for another site www.raponaids.com) But must it ALWAYS be about sex? Where is the balance? If you invented sex, does that leave any room for love? -Melissa Kimble
