Short Film: Solange – “When I Get Home” [VIDEO]

Fresh off the release of her new album When I Get Home, Solange debuts an interdisciplinary performance art film of the same name.

The stunning 33-minute visual—directed and edited by Solange with contributing directors Alan Ferguson, Terence Nance, Jacolby Satterwhite, and Ray Tintori—is a magical journey through Houston’s Third Ward. Soundtracked by the album, Solange pays homage to her culturally rich hometown. Starting with “Things I Imagined,” she dances in a shimmering fringe dress and dons a black cowboy hat and suit during “Down with the Clique.

In between scenes of a rodeo and baptism, Solange dances in front of her web cam. Famed internet stripper Aziah “Zola” Wells also makes a cameo, dancing on a pole and dragging a spaceship control panel through the desert. The Western-themed spectacular caps off with an animated sequence.

“The film is an exploration of origin, asking the question how much of ourselves do we bring with us versus leave behind in our evolution,” reads a press release. “The artist returned to Third Ward Houston to answer this.”

Solange released her fourth album, the follow-up to 2016’s A Seat at the Table, without much warning on Friday, featuring contributions from Gucci Mane, Playboi Carti, Devin the Dude, The-Dream, Tyler, the Creator, Cassie, Earl Sweatshirt, Metro Boomin, and more.

On Sunday, Solange will present a When I Get Home album experience at various locations across Houston’s Third Ward.
