58836239Twelve people have been killed, and thirty-one injured, after a solider went on a shooting rampage in Fort Hood, Texas.

The shooting took place today (November 5) at the military base. One of the dead is the gunman, 39-year-old Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. According to reports, Hasan was a psychiatrist who practiced at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood. Prior to his killing by police officers, he was allegedly upset after finding out he was being deployed to Iraq.

According to the New York Times, there was at least one more shooter who is yet to be identified. Of the 12 dead, 11 were soldiers and one was a civilian police officer. Those injuries have been cited as being in serious condition.

Speaking at an Interior Department conference today, President Obama called the tragedy a “horrific outburst of violence.”

“These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk and at times give their lives to the rest of us on a daily basis,” he said. “It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil.”
