Maya Moore, former UConn star and the No. 1 pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft, became the first female athlete to sign on with Jordan Brand on Wednesday, the company announced in a news release.
Although Michael Jordan is no longer on the court himself, his brand lives on through the likes of Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Derek Jeter and others. Now, Moore becomes the first woman on that list.
“As a student of the game, it is a dream come true to align myself with a brand that has a rich history in sports,” Moore said in a news release. “Like most kids, I grew up idolizing Michael Jordan and continue to work relentlessly to reach his iconic status on the court. I’m truly motivated to take my career to the next level as a member of Team Jordan.”
Jordan, in the news release, said he was thrilled to welcome Moore to the brand.
“Not only has Maya proven to be a prolific winner on the court, but her hunger and determination to make an impact off the court makes her a valuable addition to the Jordan family. We look forward to working with Maya as she carries her success to the next level.”
Maya Moore was the back-to-back national player of the year prior to being selected No. 1 overall by the Minnesota Lynx. Moore’s UConn squad had a record of 150-4 over her career, including an NCAA-record 90-game winning streak.
