Janet Jackson has taken notice of Lady Gaga and Rihanna‘s rise in pop culture, from the controversial outfits to chart-topping music. While Jackson says it’s great to “express yourself and be true to you,” she wonders if the two can top what they’ve already done.

“I enjoy it because it’s something kind of different,” Jackson tells Wonderland when asked about Lady Gaga’s unique style. “It’s something new to look at. It’s going to be hard [for her] to keep up with that, but who knows?”

As for those pesky comparisons to Rihanna, some calling Rihanna out for copying Jackson, the “Together Again” singer says “Everything is cyclical. They come back around at some point.”

While Jackson is considered an icon and perhaps influence for Gaga and Rihanna, don’t count her out when it comes to style and music this year.

“I can tell there’s a change going on in me. Something good,” says Jackson of a forthcoming album and perhaps new image. “A lot has happened in my life this year, a lot of changes; I think I’m kind of headed in a different direction for sure, and it’ll show itself to me. As far as keeping up, I don’t look at it like that.”

“It’s really about being who you are and doing what you want to do. I think when you try to keep up with something, it’s not a good thing. You have to express yourself and be the true you.”

As previously reported, Janet Jackson appears in the latest issue of Wonderland Magazine. She is also due to release a new album mid-to-late 2010.
