Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams passed away over the weekend.
ESPN reports that the NFL player was rushed to the emergency room after suffering cardiac arrest at his family’s home in Greenwood, South Carolina. Gaines, 26, was pronounced dead at 9 a.m.
Greendwood County coroners discovered during an autopsy that the athlete had an enlarged heart, which can often lead to heart attacks. This was shocking news for Gaines’ family who had no idea he had such a condition.
Substance abuse is not suspected as a cause of death, but South Carolina authorities are still doing toxicology tests. Results will likely not be available for at least two months.
Gaines had just finshed his third season with the Bears at the time of his death. R.I.P
