Pizza Hut is no stranger to selling odd things. In its Middle East restaurants, Pizza Hut began offering a cheeseburger crusted pizza to customers in April. In the United States, the restaurant has launched a new, untitled Pizza Hut fragrance.
Pizza Hut’s director of marketing, Beverly D’Cruz, described the scent as freshly baked dough with ”a little bit of spice“ mixed in. She added the creation of the fragrance was more for entertainment purposes as opposed to actual usage.
“We discovered it was hard to match the smell of freshly baked bread,” D’Cruz said. “But it smells somewhat close.” One could also spray the perfume around a room to make it smell like pizza, she added.
The idea of the Pizza Hut fragrance transpired from the restaurant’s Facebook page when an employee jested about creating a fragrance that smelled like Pizza Hut pizzas. When a slew of fans commented on the post and insisted they’d use the fragrance, the marketing department decided to move forward with giving the people what they wanted. Shortly after fans insisted that they’d wear the fragrance, an announcement about the scent was made on the restaurant’s Facebook fan page:
“We’ve decided to reward our 100,000 fans by actually creating the Pizza Hut perfume! The first 100 people to direct message us will get a bottle of this limited-edition scent. Share this photo with a friend!”
If you were hoping to get a bottle of Pizza Hut perfume, unfortunately the limited-edition run has already been distributed. Pizza Hut has no intentions to mass market the product.
It must be nice to frivolously spend money on a marketing item that isn’t going to yield any real profit at the brink of a fiscal cliff. Great job Pizza Hut!
