Jay-Z set social media on fire when he held an impromptu Twitter Q&A to promote his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail on Monday. He continued the conversation during his visit to Angie Martinez on Hot 97 on Tuesday. The Roc Nation boss gushed about fatherhood and shared his support for Miley Cyrus, who he shouts out on “Somewhereinamerica.”
He revealed that Beyoncé has recorded “a hundred thousand amazing songs” and that the couple dances in their socks at home to her new music. But while she appears on MCHG, he ruled out a Best of Both Worlds-type album.
Hov also voiced his opinion on Yeezus and his embattled ex-business partner Damon Dash, while offering his words of wisdom to Rihanna.
Plus, will there be a sequel to Watch the Throne?
Find out all the answers and listen to the full interview below.
On failing: “I fail all the time. I’m a person that loves to win. I don’t hate to lose.”
On fatherhood: “It’s more reaffirming. The things that’s really important in life and editing your life in such a way that you don’t have anything that’s distracting you, anything that takes away from that time you can be with your child.”
On whether he reads blogs: “Not that much, but once in a while, yeah. More music though, just music. Not like we worried about gossip. It’s not my business.”
On watching reality TV including “Love & Hip Hop”: “I’ve seen everything at least once or twice. I’m really an ESPN, HBO guy.”
On money: “I just don’t need money. … I think success is just being able to do what you like to do on your terms.”
On Miley Cyrus: “Miley’s serious. I like what she’s doing right now. She’s fearless. I think it’s more a reaction to people wanting her to be Hannah Montana. Just watching the situation, people want her to be something and she’s like, ‘I’m not that. I was six years old. You want me to be six years old forever?’ And this is her reaction to it. Maybe it’s loud, but it’s understandable.”
On whether Roc Nation would manage Miley: “Hey, there’s room on the roster.”
On buying back the rights to Roc-A-Fella: “We just got it back from Universal. Thank you guys up there. The chain remains.”
On Yeezus: “I love it. It’s polarizing because it’s art. That’s what art is. It forces you to have an opinion. … He’s fearless.”
On what he’s listening to right now: “There’s no room in the [CD] changer. There’s Wale, J. Cole, Yeezus, and Hova.”
On Beyoncé’s new music: “Right now, B has a hundred thousand amazing songs.”
On attending the presidential inauguration: “They were screaming from the rafters. It was ratchet.”
On a Best of Both Worlds-type album with Beyoncé: “No way. You see how that ended.”
On a sequel to Watch the Throne: “Yes, hopefully.” But he and Kanye haven’t started recording yet. “It hasn’t begun.”
On Dame Dash: “No matter how many years I ain’t see him, the love is still there because what we’ve done will forever be stamped in history. … I have ultimate confidence in him that he’ll find his way because he’s an amazing and really smart guy. He’s a hustler and he’s highly intelligent. I always root for him and always believe that he’ll find his way out of it.”
On advising Rihanna: “I give information when asked and then you let everyone make their own decision. I can’t control the outcome of her life, I can’t intervene. I can give advice if asked.”
On Blue Ivy: “She’s very musically inclined, amazing rhythm. She’s around music all the time.”
