Just after two years of dating, rapper/actor Common and tennis player Serena Williams ended their public relationship for unknown reasons.

The breakup may come as a surprise since the couple was spotted together back in April for the premiere of Common’s film Date Night but a friend of the couple stated that they “just grew apart.” Although Serena wasn’t present at the premiere of Common’s recently released film, Just Wright, he did accredit her for helping him understand his role as an athlete.

“One thing I got to say is that athletes, they play through the pain. I’ve seen the pain that not only Serena or Venus would go through, but other the athletes that I know,” he said.

“I hit with her a couple of times but it’s kind of tough…me, having an athletic mind-state and not being able to defeat your companion,” he joked. “If I’m playing Uno, I want to win.”

The ten year age gap between the couple didn’t keep them from sharing the same long term goals such as family after Common appeared on the Wendy Williams Show on May 18th and admitted that he hopes to begin a family in the future.

“It would be a great thing but I can’t say that right now. I would love to be married and have children someday. So if Serena is that person, it would be a lovely thing.”
