Antoine Dodson, whose televised “hide your kids, hide your wife” rant about an alleged rapist made him a YouTube sensation, was arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession during a vehicle stop in Huntsville early Saturday morning.

Police said Dodson was pulled over at 1:57 a.m. near University Drive and Arctic Street, in the vicinity of the Northwoods public housing development.

The incident report says officers confiscated a “small bag” of marijuana during the traffic stop.

In addition to second-degree possession, Dodson was charged with speeding, violation of Alabama’s mandatory vehicle liability insurance law and two counts of failure to appear in court on an old traffic citation.

He was released from the Madison County Jail after posting a $1,340 cash bond, police spokesman Harry Hobbs said Saturday afternoon.

Although Dodson did not return messages from The Times, he was hardly keeping a low profile.

The 24-year-old broke the news of his arrest on his Twitter account, saying he had just gotten out of jail on a “weak charge.” Dodson said he was driving his new Mercedes at the time.

The pot bust was also featured on Dodson’s website, which even provided links to arrest stories on al.com, People Magazine, celebrity gossip site TMZ.com and others.

Richard Figueroa, a Huntsville talent agent who helped represent Dodson until about three months ago, said he was surprised by the arrest. Dodson had moved to Los Angeles in January to pursue a television career.

“I guess being out in L.A., the restrictions and the laws are different than they are here,” Figueroa said Saturday.

It was not immediately clear if Dodson has moved back or is just here visiting relatives.

Figueroa said the arrest isn’t necessarily a bad thing for Dodson’s career, which includes a line of “Hide Yo Kids, Hide Yo Wife” T-shirts, coffee mugs and cigarette lighters. Dodson was collaborating with Entertainment One on a reality show about his move from Alabama to California.

“In today’s market, (the arrest) could fuel the fire for more interest” in Dodson, Figueroa said. “Not that it should be promoted, but you have to turn something negative into something positive.”

Dodson was an unknown until an emotional TV news interview last August about his sister being attacked at the Lincoln Park public housing development.

When New York songwriting duo the Gregory Brothers set Dodson’s rant to music, he became an overnight Internet sensation.

“The Bed Intruder Song” was the most-watched video on YouTube in 2010 and has now been viewed more than 79 million times.
