The-Dream Reveals That He Made $15 Million Off Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’
Before the holidays, The-Dream visited Tim Westwood’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show in London while on tour with Rihanna. The hitmaker discussed the big paycheck he received from writing “Umbrella,” the reason behind his split from Christina Milian, and the process of penning Justin Bieber’s smash “Baby.”
Dream, whose written for Beyoncé and Mariah Carey, revealed that he banked $15 million off Rihanna’s hit single and is using the money to pay his bills.
“I got child support bills, I got old wives’ bills, I got new wives’ bills. I’m working on my third wife, so I gotta pay those bills,” he joked.
The singer-songwriter, who has one daughter with Christina Milian and three with Nivea, wants more kids.
“We ain’t finished yet,” he said. “I gotta keep writing ‘Umbrellas.’”
He also opened up about his divorce from the “Dip It Low” singer, explaining that it wasn’t another woman that tore the relationship apart.
“I’m a Virgo, so I’m a perfectionist by natural habit. It wasn’t about a particular thing that actually happened, even though that’s how the media would make it out to be. It was more so about not being ready on both sides. It was really rushed.”
Although Christina received credit for co-writing Bieber’s “Baby,” Dream says it was done as a favor. “That was just because I’m generous,” he told Westwood.
