The rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, was left with multiple injuries from the shooting including a cracked hip, shattered bones and shrapnel in his tongue.

“I slur a little bit from time to time,” Jackson said about the shrapnel during an interview on which aired on Monday, according to CNN. “But this is the new voice, the voice that works.”

It was his new voice that put a special spin on his debut single “In Da Club,” which Morgan admitted was on his gym playlist.

“No one is going to believe me when I say this,” Morgan said. “But I work out to that song. Literally, it’s on my iPod. It’s the top of my gym collection. And it never fails to get me going. It’s one of the great workout songs ever.”

“The problem with that kind of song, Piers, is you’ve got to create something that’s equivalent to it,” Jackson told Morgan.

“In Da Club” went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 2003 and went on to become certified gold. It also earned the rapper his first Grammy nominations.

The 36-year-old rapper believes the track’s success lies in the “it’s your birthday” line.

“Every day is someone’s birthday, so it’s relevant all over again,” the rapper said. He also called the song “the old reliable. If I can’t move the crowd, put it on.”

Jackson was raised in Queens, New York by his grandparents after his father ran out and his mother was shot when he was 8-years-old. He recently told Global Grind that his untitled fifth studio album will be available on December 2011. The rapper launched a comedy website ThisIs50Comedy.com in April.
