Earlier this year, Trey Songz took R. Kelly to task for using Auto-Tune on his Demo Tape mixtape. Kells responded earlier this month on DJ Skee’s radio show.
“If you’re gonna step out on that limb, which is very thin, you should make a personal call,” Kells told Skee. “Now if you’re trying to sell an album and start a beef, then you make it public. … But you have to be very careful with that. Because why would I tell Stevie Wonder, even though he doesn’t have an album, ‘You need to do this and that’ … or talk about Stevie Wonder. I would not do that. Because Stevie Wonder has fans too. … Just as Stevie Wonder and Charlie Wilson and Donny Hathaway and Sam Cooke paved the way for the R. Kellys and Aaron Halls and The-Dreams and everybody else. As we come up, we’re paving the way for the next person … but you cannot talk about someone who has done what they’ve done in this industry, which has changed the industry … and still doing it. You’re trying to throw a rock at the top of the Sears Tower.”
On Wednesday, while visiting MTV’s offices, Songz said the situation between him and the Pied Piper is not that serious
“It wasn’t a beef,” Trey smiled. “It was me telling R. Kelly to take the damn Auto-Tune off his voice, which he did on his album. His album is good.”
Song’z Ready has been ballyhooed as being one of the top R&B projects of 2009. He has the singles “Say Aah” and “I Invented Sex” out right now. Not resting on his success, the Virginia-born artist said he’s ready for a follow-up.
“I’m trying to make sure I have an album out ASAP,” he said. “I ain’t gonna tell you how soon, though. It’s not gonna be two years. I wanna use the same recipe I’ve been using. If anybody is added, it’ll be for real purpose. I spoke to Pharrell. I told him I’m getting in, Timbaland as well — both huge Virginian-grown producers. I definitely would love to work with them. But Troy Taylor I’ve been working with since the beginning of my career. Plus Bryan-Michael Cox I’ve had a couple hits with. I definitely wanna make sure we use the same chemistry.”

“I love to keep growing,” he said. “Wherever the music takes me. I hope the bigger I get, the more success and celebrity I attain, I hope to use my music to touch people in different ways. I look to make more music that’s within the realm of Ready and even grow further.”
