A former White House staffer says changes made by Social Secretary may have led to security relapses allowing Michaele and Tareq Salahi to crash last week’s state dinner.
Cathy Hargraves, a former White House guest list chief, told Newsweek that upon her appointment as Social Secretary last February, Desiree Rogers changed the protocol for greeting guests at the White House East Gate entrance during state dinners.
Citing tough economic times, Hargraves says Rogers no longer felt the need for a staffer to stand at the gate checking guests in.
Had a staffer from the social secretary’s office been at the gate, the Salahi’s “would not have made it past the East Gate portico,” she says.
Rogers has acknowledged that no one from her office was at the East Gate entrance. The secret service has also publicly apologized for the lapse in security.
