Nicki Minaj’s “Your Love” has been a breakout summer smash, so, music fans are familiar with the line “For your lovin’, I’mma Die Hard like Bruce Willis.” Since the song has topped the charts, it was only a matter of time before Willis got wind of the shout-out.
“I can’t get enough songs on the radio that have my name in it,” Willis told MTV News in July. “It’s always an honor. I love that song. I don’t understand it, but I can understand my name.”
It turns out Minaj isn’t an MC who name-checks ’em and leaves ’em. The hip-hop diva told MTV News at the Teen Choice Awards that she was geeked that Willis is into the record.
“I saw the [MTV] footage when he was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know what she’s saying in it, but I can recognize my name.’ I was like ‘Yes!’ ” the Young Money diva exclaimed. Apparently, the femcee has been a die-hard Willis fan for a while. “It was so funny, because I had the biggest crush on Bruce Willis when I was little,” the MC confided.
Getting the attention of her girlhood crush is just one of the surprises Minaj has experienced lately. The MC just scored her first MTV Video Music Awards nomination for Best New Artist and admitted that she was blindsided by the news.
“Someone sent me an e-mail saying congratulations and I was like, ‘For what?’ And they said, ‘For the VMA.’ And I was like, ‘What was I nominated for?’ And when they said, ‘Best New Artist,’ I just started screaming,” Minaj said. “I definitely thought I’d get one someday, but not before I put the album out. I never thought I’d get a nomination [this year]. … I didn’t even think I’d get invited!”
