Roc Nation Sports has only been in existence for a short period, but it is already under scrutiny.
The NFL reports that the NFL Players Association is investigating Roc Nation’s recruitment of New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith.
The union will send a letter of inquiry to Roc Nation Sports agent Kim Miale to gather information about the extent to which Jay-Z was involved in getting Smith signed, after Smith posted a picture of himself with Jay-Z on Instagram during his agent recruitment process.
An existing rule prohibits agents from having colleagues or friends who aren’t NFLPA-certified agents present for recruiting meetings.
Smith’s adviser John Thornton was quoted by CBS as saying “I was in those meetings, and Jay-Z connected with him on many levels.” Thornton would go on to say he was misquoted.
It is unclear what would happen if the NFLPA found that Jay-Z was in violation of the rule.
