According to Deadline, New Line Cinema is developing the untitled project with Brett Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment and producer Jon Shestack. Mariah is said to play “a major role” in the film as well as the soundtrack, which will also include songs from different artists.
The film is based on an idea that Carey brought to Ratner. The theme will include the ability of music to transport people back in time to find their truest feelings.
“It’s a little bit about how music can take you back in time,” Shestack told EW. “It will be everything you hope a Christmas movie with Mariah Carey would be.”
Writers David Diamond and David Weissman (The Family Man) are on board, and James Packer and John Cheng of RatPac Entertainment will executive produce.
Mariah has become known as the queen of Christmas. She has released two Christmas albums including 1994’s Merry Christmas, which has sold more than 14 million copies to date and spawned the classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” In December, she headlined a series of Christmas concerts at New York’s Beacon Theatre.
Before she spreads more Christmas cheer, Mariah will head to Las Vegas in May for her “#1’s” residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
