Jay-Z doesn’t play on the basketball court, but the rapper-mogul looks to have scored his biggest basket yet. Following recent signings of MLB All-Star Robinson Cano, WNBA standout Skylar Diggins, and NFL prospect Geno Smith, the Brooklyn-artist and his new Roc Nation Sports agency has landed NBA superstar Kevin Durant.
First reported by Sports Business Journal’s Liz Mullen, the four-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA scoring champion has departed with agent Rob Pelinka of Landmark Sports to join Jay-Z’s company according to Yahoo! Sports. While the former Brooklyn Nets minority owner is divesting his shares to become an agent, he has yet to be certified by the National Basketball Players Association.
“KD doesn’t want a traditional NBA agent anymore,” a league source with knowledge of his thinking told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night. “He wants Jay-Z to handle his branding. …He had a chance to be with his idol and couldn’t say no.”
One the deal is complete, Roc Nation Sports will land what many feel is the second best player in the NBA.
