Nearly two months after his death, friends and family of Heavy D are learning what caused his untimely demise.
According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, the ’90s rapper suffered from a pulmonary embolism caused by deep leg vein thrombosis.
TMZ explains that a pulmonary embolism is a blockage of one or more arteries in the lungs, often caused by blood clots which enter from other parts of the body. Heavy had a blood clot in his leg.
Coroner’s office spokesman Craig Harvey said that weight and an international flight were contributing factors in the “Overweight Lover’s” death. Days earlier, he flew back to Los Angeles after performing at the Michael Jackson tribute concert in Wales.
The Coroner’s Office classified Heavy’s death as “natural.” He reportedly also suffered from heart disease, which may have played a role in his death.
Heavy D died outside his Beverly Hills home on November 9. He was 44 years old.
