Macklemore isn’t the only rapper coming under fire in Drake’s Rolling Stone interview. The Canadian MC reportedly took shots at his idol Kanye West.
Despite their friendship, Drake wasn’t afraid to criticize Kanye’s acclaimed album Yeezus.
“There were some real questionable bars on there,”
he told the magazine’s Jonah Weiner, who visited the rapper at his YOLO estate in Hidden Hills, Calif.
“Like that ‘Swaghili’ line? Come on, man. Even Fabolous wouldn’t say some shit like that.”
But he did admit that he idolizes the Chicago MC.
“Kanye’s the reason I’m here. I love everything about that guy,” he said.
After the quotes were published, Drake fired back at the magazine on Twitter. While he did not deny making the Yeezus statements, he hinted that his comments were off the record.
“I never commented on Yeezus for my interview portion of Rolling Stone,” he tweeted.
Drake was set to appear on the cover of the magazine, but it was pulled at the last minute and given to actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died suddenly of a drug overdose last week. He slammed the magazine for their decision to replace him.
“They also took my cover from me last minute and ran the issue,” he said. “I’m disgusted with that. RIP to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. All respect due. But the press is evil.”
Going forward, he plans to refrain from doing press.
“I’m done doing interviews for magazines. I just want to give my music to the people. That’s the only way my message gets across accurately.”
