D’Angelo is staging a comeback. The R&B crooner is set to make his first televised performance in over a decade at next month’s BET Awards.
Fresh off his surprise set at Bonnaroo, D’Angelo will take the stage at the 12th annual show, airing live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 1.
“Usually, we love to keep surprises…but this year we want EVERYONE watching when D’Angelo takes the stage at the BET Awards!” stated Stephen G. Hill, BET’s President of Music Programming and Specials. “His talents have been away from us for far too long and we’re excited and honored that he’s decided to make his American re-entry at this year’s BET Awards.”
In addition to working on his long-awaited third album, the 38-year-old singer toured briefly in Europe earlier this year and will play the ESSENCE Music Festival in New Orleans on July 6.
The BET Awards ’12 will also include performances by Usher, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, G.O.O.D. Music featuring Big Sean and Pusha T, Maybach Music’s Rick Ross, Meek Mill, and Wale, and a star-studded tribute to Whitney Houston featuring her mother Cissy Houston.
