CNN has reported that the 1997 murder investigation of rapper Christopher “Notorious B.I.G” Wallace has gained momentum. This is subsequent to new leads and information in recent months that have emerged in the 14-year old investigation. A task force has been established consisting of local and federal law enforcement agencies to fiercely pursue tips involving the 1997 assassination of Biggie Smalls.
The Los Angeles Police Department has affirmed that there were leads that rejuvenated the case. However, because this is a current and developing investigation the police department was unable to elaborate further.
Although Big Poppa’s murder case remains unsolved, there are several theories regarding the identities and motives of those involved. One theory by retired LAPD detective, Russell Poole and Randall Sullivan, is that Marion “Suge” Knight and David Mack, former disgraced LAPD officer and Death Row security employee, conspired to kill the rapper.
Mack, a member of the Blood street gang, was released from prison on May 2010 after serving 14 years in his role in a $700,000 bank robbery while still being a police officer. It is also believed that one of Mack’s associates, Amir Muhammad aka Henry Billups, was the trigger man based on a facial composite evidence provided by an informant.
The LA Times have accused Sullivan of using dishonorable tactics. In response, Sullivan has criticized the newspaper of being a co-conspirator in the cover up.
To this day none of these theories have been proven.
