The mother of Bruno Mars died in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Saturday. Bernadette Hernandez was 55 years old and suffered a brain aneurysm, a rep for the Grammy-winning singer told The Associated Press.
Hernandez was a hula dancer and a singer who immigrated from the Philippines and was an early supporter of her children’s music careers. Mars has four sisters who make up the group The Lylas, and a brother who plays the drums in his band the Hooligans.
Mars’ peers took to Twitter to share their condolences.
“Sending my love and condolences to @BrunoMars at this difficult time! I’m sincerely praying for you bro! #1Love,” tweeted Rihanna.
In a video posted to YouTube, a four-year-old Bruno can be heard singing a song for his mother called “I Love You Mom.” “I love you mom, you are my favorite girl,” he sings on the sweet dedication.
Mars is set to kick off “The Moonshine Jungle World Tour” on June 22, but it’s unknown if the tour schedule will be affected by his mother’s passing.
