The Fresh Prince could be turning into the Genie. Will Smith is reportedly in talks to join Guy Richie’s live-action reboot of Aladdin.
Fans may remember that the Genie was previously portrayed by the late Robin Williams in the animated Disney film, which was released in 1992.
The new version of Aladdin will be based on the original movie, which grossed $504 million. It was written by John August (Big Fish) and produced by Dan Lin, with Jonathan Eirich as executive producer, according to Deadline.
Aladdin joins other live-action adaptation musicals, including the most recent, Beauty and the Beast, which has grossed $1 billion worldwide.
The film’s musical element jives with Smith’s past as a rapper. He’s also used his music to sell movies, including hit songs for Men in Black and Wild Wild West.
Smith was previously in talks with Tim Burton about his forthcoming film Dumbo. However, he exited those talks due to scheduling conflicts, according to Variety.
Next up, Smith is set to reprise his role alongside Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys 4 and Bad Boys for Life, the sequels in the Bad Boys franchise. He will also play Scott Ward in the fantasy film Bright co-starring Brandon Larracuente and Noomi Rapace.
