Mega-stars Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith, have all signed on as producers for the hit Broadway musical, Fela!
According to the New York Times, the trio, who are also investors in the beauty line Carol’s Daughter, are expected to attend opening night of the production on Monday, at the Eugene O’Neill Theater. This marks the first time any of them have produced a Broadway show.
The musical is based around Afrobeat icon and political activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who fused jazz, rock, and funk in music that touched people globally. Kuti died in 1997, from AIDS. In the musical, he is played by Sahr Ngaujah, whose performance thus far is critically acclaimed. It is directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones.
How much exactly Jay and the Smiths have invested into the musical has not been disclosed. –VIBE
