One of the most-talked-about tracks on Thank Me Later is the opening cut “Fireworks,” mainly because of what it reveals about Drake’s brief relationship with Rihanna. In a new interview, Drizzy opens up about how the pop diva broke his heart.
After their much-publicized rendezvous and make-out session at Lucky Strike Lanes & Lounge in New York one year ago, Drake rapped about the experience on “Fireworks.”
“I could tell it wasn’t love, I just thought you’d fuck with me/ Who could’ve predicted Lucky Strike would have you stuck with me, damn/ I kept my wits about me luckily, what happened between us that night, it always seems to trouble me/ Now all of a sudden these gossip rags wanna cover me, and you makin’ it seem like it happened that way because of me/ But I was curious, and I’ll never forget it baby, what an experience/ You could’ve been the one, but it wasn’t that serious.”
October’s Very Own explains what happened between them. “I was a pawn,” he candidly tells The New York Times. “You know what she was doing to me? She was doing exactly what I’ve done to so many women throughout my life, which is show them quality time, then disappear. I was like, ‘Wow, this feels terrible.’”
While he may not have found his love with Rihanna, he questions whether it’s still out there. “Did I sacrifice something?” he asks. “Have I not realized what it is yet because I’m enjoying this too much?”
The article also mentions that he wrote a song for Rihanna that never got released.
