Up and coming Georgia rapper Yung Hott, 27, was gunned down this past weekend while on the set of his first music video in his hometown of Griffin. According to authorities, about 20 rounds were fired around 6 p.m. on Saturday (May 15), and the aspiring rapper was shot in the head and died at the scene.
Hott, whose real name was Jerode Paige, was pursuing a rap career in an attempt to escape a past that included prison time and convictions for drug related crimes and possession of a firearm. He was just released from Wheeler Correctional Facility in central Georgia this past June and was on parole.
“He got out [of prison] and he said he wasn’t going to let anybody stop him from getting his career,” said his uncle Gary Paige to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He wanted to give his grandmother a lot. He was really into his music and he wanted to show his grandmother he had the ability to be somebody.”
Another uncle, Kenny Paige, also told the AJC that nearly 200 people were working on the video or standing by watching when the shooting took place.
“I mean, it was broad daylight,” he said. “I heard a lot of gunshots and people scattered.”
Witnesses reported to Atlanta’s WAGA-TV that a man parked a car, and then got out and fired at the rapper at point-blank range. Three others suffered non-life-threatening injuries including Taylor Berry, a 5 year old girl who was playing nearby that was shot in the foot.
“She crawled from (the toy car) to the porch,” said Taylor’s Grandmother Virginia. “She says, ‘Grandma, I’ve been hit’.”
Police have not released a motive for the killing, but they have arrested Bahir Howard, 22, Corderra Walker, 21, Terry Fuller, 21, and Terrance Jones, 23, and charged them with murder, aggravated battery, child cruelty, and weapons charges. They are all currently being held without bond at the Spalding County jail.
