Questlove of the Roots caused quite a stir on the Internet when he declared on his Twitter account (@questlove) that Beyoncé is the new Michael Jackson, meaning she’s the biggest pop star in the world right now.

But are there other superstars like Rihanna or Lady Gaga who deserve the title?

According to pop culture blogger Perez Hilton—who spoke to VIBE over the phone from South By Southwest, where he held a showcase last Saturday—the numbers don’t lie.

“I would say that Gaga is a bigger pop star than Beyoncé right now, just [based on] the sheer statistics. Like, all of Gaga’s singles have gone top of the charts,” said Perez. “Gaga’s tour, selling out. Beyoncé’s last tour did not have a lot of sellouts. And I’m not dissing her or anything. I’m just looking at it statistically.”

The self-proclaimed Gaga fanatic vowed no bias. But whichever side you’re on, you can’t deny that both ladies have dominated pop lately. Gaga’s singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” have all topped the Billboard chart, and so did Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).”

The two combined bring a lot of star power. See: their duets, “Video Phone (Remix)” and “Telephone,” the video for which is a nearly 10-minute saga that already ranks among the best music videos of all time to some.

“I think the ‘Telephone’ video blows away the ‘Video Phone’ video. ‘Telephone’ is such an epic work of art. It’s like a mini movie and there’s so much going on it really lends itself to repeated viewings,” said Perez. “What’s great about it is even though it’s Gaga’s song featuring Beyoncé, they both come across really well in the video and they both work really well together. [There’s] lots of criticism from lots of people but you know what, Gaga doesn’t care. She makes art and music for her fans and her fans love the video.” -VIBE

Ummmm…*crickets* Perez WTF are you thinking? Beyoncé’s definitely the biggest Pop Star on the planet right now…It’s like comparing Harold Minor (Baby Jordan) to the legendary Michael Jordan at this point. Gaga has done some commendable things but she’s not quite Beyoncé’s status. We’ll revisit this conversation next decade.
