Blac Youngsta 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards – HHUCIT

The 2016 BET Hip Hop awards hosted by Dj Khaled was lit. Major key. Some of the dopest artist and talent were in attendance. The awards took place at The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, GA.

The green carpet kicked the party off. Several media outlets gathered to cover the awards in Hotlanta. There was an array of talent. Everyone graced the carpet from veteran rappers to newcomers, award winning djs, producers, Internet sensations and reality stars.

The carpet ended with a Big Tigger Basement-esque freestyle booth.

That same energy from the carpet was present for the opening act. The crowd cheered for the dark figure draped in a fur. Once he spoke his first word the crowd rose to their feet and went crazy. This was Gucci Mane’s first awards show since his return. The industry and his fans were elated to see him back on stage performing his classics.

Following, Gucci’s performance was Young thug and Travis Scott ft. Quavo with “Pick up the phone”. Between cyphers the newcomers stole the show. Young M.A blazed the stage with the summer anthem “OOOUU” followed by performances by Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yahcty , 21 Savage , BiG baby D.R.A.M and DAE DAE.

Track of the year went to Fat Joe ft. Remy Ma, French Montana and Infared “ All the way up” They brought fellow nominee and NYC native Desiigner up to receive the award with them. Remy gave a heart felt acceptance speech. She spoke about how she believed it was the end. Her support system helped and encouraged her during the process. Not before leaving the stage she had to congratulate Allen Iverson for being inducted in the basketball hall of fame. She then credited him with for setting the braids trend and not Kim Kardashian with her boxer braids.

Chance the rapper won Artist of the year.

The Hustler of the year award went to none other host of this year’s awards Dj Khaled.

Up next 2015 Host the legendary Snopp Dogg received the “I am Hip Hop Award” presented by Kendrick Lamar. The multi-platinum artist thanked everyone and went on to explain his influences and the current state of hip-hop. He talked about when he first started people didn’t know what to think of him or his music. He understands and respects the new artists. He went on to say that everyone one might not get you but you too are hip hop. He elaborated on the fact that this is all hip hop and instead of being a bitter old rapper he will always embrace the newcomers and change. Real words from Uncle Snoop.

Although everyone was there to celebrate their accomplishments and have a good time they did not lose focus on major issues that are going on in America and our communities.

T.I performed “We Will Not”. The imagery combined with the strong lyrical content certainly shifted the vibe.

Big K.R.I.T followed up with a strong spoken word piece that called out the racial injustices that African Americans are facing and the current state of America during this election year.

Desiigner closed out the show equipped with a church choir. He performed a dark yet heavily energized “Timmy Turner”.  It was an evening of celebrations, surprises and awareness. Sharyon Ellis
