President Barack Obama is gearing up for the election a mere 34 days away, but he has a sweet milestone to celebrate Wednesday: His wedding anniversary with wife Michelle.

“Twenty years ago today, I married the love of my life and my best friend. Happy anniversary, Michelle,” Obama Tweeted.

The couple met at Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin in 1989, and shared their first kiss outside a Hyde Park shopping center. There is even a plaque outside, which bears a quote the then Senator shared with Oprah Winfrey in 2007:

“On our first date, I treated her to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb. I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate.”

Now, for Winfrey’s November issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, out Oct. 9, the Obamas are sharing more secrets to their successful marriage.

“When you’re under all of these pressures, to come home every single night … and have Michelle and the girls there … they are my balance and keep me grounded, and that’s truer now than it’s ever been,” the President says.

Michelle adds, they also try not to sweat the small stuff.

“I might want to talk to him about an issue I have with what he said the other day, but you know what, it’s not really that important,” she says. “I’m stockpiling a list of issues that I’d like to discuss with him in 2016 though.”

Sometimes those issues are as simple as chores, something even the President does for his wife. “Shoveling snow,” he tells O is his assignment. “You try chipping some ice off some windshields when it’s five below at six in the morning.”

While the President and his Republican competitor Gov. Mitt Romney will be participating in the first presidential debate Wednesday night, hopefully Obama will be able to sneak in a dinner date with the First Lady. If that fails,

“pizza nights around the White House are pretty great,” he says.
